Positive is everything!

Time flies. This semester is so short that it is hard to believe we are all going to do our placement after two weeks. Now, I feel very excited for the placement but I am a little bit worried in the meanwhile.

You might wonder why I am worried. Honestly, I am kind of afraid of doing something wrong or I fail my employer’s expectations even though I know it is common for an intern.

However, I am not going to run away and I think making mistakes can help me to learn more experiences. Furthermore, when we face something that we think is very challenging for us, we should try our best to overcome it instead of ignore or get away from it.

Although I am still a little bit worried, the excitements are bigger than worries. I will try to think things differently when I face challenges. Thinking things differently helps us to increase positive energy. Lastly, if we are optimistic, I believe that there is nothing can beat us.

The approach of the placement!

In this week’s blog, I am going to briefly outline my marketing plan for recruiting new students from Taiwan. I have been thinking of how I can reach those people who are interested in studying in Canada. Then, I came up with writing blogs and creating a Facebook page which would be the most effective way to get people involved.

The idea of writing blogs is inspired by my instructor, Frank Armstrong. He said that writing blogs not only can improve your writing skills but also can let people know what you are doing. Furthermore, I think that blogging is a good access to provide more complete information than Facebook.

Wretch is a famous blog website in Taiwan and I will post both my current and previous SLC life on this blog website. Since my placement only has a month, I will post at least two blogs per week. The information of studying in Canada such as applying a study permit will be included in the blog as well.

The other is creating a Facebook page for advertising SLC. This Facebook page will be connected directly to Wretch blog website so that both of tools can influence each other. The thing I am struggling is that I have to find out a way to make the Facebook page really reach out and meet those people who are interested in studying in Canada. Hopefully I can figure it out before my placement gets started.

SLC Style!Image

I was supposed to post my marketing plan; however, I got a big surprise that I want to share in this week’s blog. Ming Xue, who is my classmate, is going to do his placement in the international office. This is exciting news as this is where I will do my placement as well.

Ming told me that we will not merely make a marketing plan to advertise St. Lawrence College and recruit new students from our own countries, but we are also going to develop a “SLC Style” video to promote our college.

Although I think that I am a person who always prefers quiet activities, this video project sounds very interesting and attractive to me. I did a video project to introduce mobile marketing last year and our team did a great job. (My previous video for mobile marketing) Since then, I realized that I like to make videos so I feel so excited now!

Making a promotional video also means the task that I will do in the placement is becoming more challenging and I am able to participate in this opportunity. I believe it will be a lot of fun!

What is my next step?

I have been thinking what I can contribute as a marketing student to my placement, which is in the international office at St. Lawrence College. When Mr. Keefe who is my employer asked me what my placement plan was, I told him that I would like to establish an on-line marketing plan to recruit new students from Taiwan.

However, I think that I should gather as much information as I can before I start my online marketing plan. As a result, I did some research about international students.

I found out an average growth rate of international students in tertiary education across all regions of Canada. The latest information shows that there was an increase of 7.3 percentages in Ontario from 2001 to 2008.

This number is a little bit higher than the average; therefore, I think there are many possibilities to attract new students to study at St. Lawrence College. Next blog I will make a specific goal and plan for my placement and I think it will be fun.

Ready for the Exploration of Placement

Posted on February 22, 2013

Doing a placement at international office in the college might sound boring; however, it is an interesting exploration for me definitely! Why would I say it is an exploration for me? It is because I know nothing about our international office even though I usually go there to ask questions. It is quite funny that you think you know something or someplace very well but the truth is not.

After my exploration has started, this placement opportunity gives me a new, deep understanding of what our international office is doing. It hosts many activities for international student and it also establishes a Facebook community for international students.

Before I decided to do this placement, I have never thought how it is operating and what are attractive traits of St. Lawrence College, which make students from other countries, decide to study here.

Now, doing a placement at international office in the college sounds boring? For me, the answer is no. Since I am “half” of members of international office, I can’t wait for making an interesting marketing plan to recruit new students from my country.

It Is a Blessing in Disguise

banner05I believe that children are strongly influenced by their parents.

My father is an entrepreneur and he established a technology-related company in Taiwan before I was born. I think it becomes the biggest reason why I always want an opportunity to do my placement in a mobile company.

However, things did not go smoothly, and eventually I got a placement opportunity to work in the international office at the college through the help of my professor, Pam Armstrong.

The primary job I am going to do in my placement is creating an online marketing plan to recruit new students from my country. Honestly, I think this job is very suitable for me since I am an introverted person. I always prefer stationary, quiet activities compared to dynamic activities. Therefore, I think that I will very enjoy creating an online marketing plan very much.

I just saw an article from my professor, Frank Armstrong. It makes me think more deeply about people ideas about introverts. I searched “introvert” on Google, and it led me to a great video from Ted Talk. (The Power of Introvert) The video was about a Wall Street lawyer who preferred to be an extrovert for her job, but she is really an introvert.

“it is a blessing in disguise.” Even though I didn’t get into the industry that I want, I got an opportunity to do things that are suitable to my personality. I believe that it will be a great experience for me.

Who I Am + What I Expect

Gwen Lin

I am an international student who is Business-Marketing at St. Lawrence College. When I was in my country, Taiwan, I was a first year university student. After I had finished my first year university life, I quitted. The reason why I quit was because I wanted to pursue a different learning experience. In Taiwan, people have a party-hard attitude in my university after so many years of working hard in school.

I knew learning business-marketing in Canada, which is a western country, would be very helpful for me in the future; not only that I will be more competitive compared with other people who are in my country, but it is also a significant chance to promote myself.

Since I am an international student studying in Canada, I have Chinese cultural background and I have learned many western’s culture as well. I speak both English and Mandarin, so I have this language advantage that can help me to communicate with many business people from other countries much easier. Lastly, I have a young and enthusiastic mind and thinking, so that I believe I can benefit and contribute many new ideas to the marketing field.

I am going to do my placement at the international student office of St. Lawrence College. Firstly, I planned to do my placement at Rogers, but the stores that I called did not reply to me. Thus, I asked my professor for help, and she helped me to get this placement opportunity. I am looking forward the placement opportunity and hopefully I can help the office to recruit new students from my country or China.

The career I hope to have five years from now is to work as an international sales person in my family business. This is also one of the reasons why I am learning business in Canada. I think doing a placement at my college is a great opportunity for me, because I will feel very comfortable to work at this place, which I am very familiar with; furthermore, this placement opportunity will offer me an experience to develop a marketing plan and know what a work relationship look like in here. I believe that I will learn a lot through my placement.
